6 days – round trip along the Manu road

Fixed departures. Groups of 2 to 8 people.

General Itinerary:

Departing early from Cusco, we begin our 8-hour journey in private transport, ascending to the high mountain area at 3,900 m (13,000 ft). After a brief stop in Ninamarca to see the pre-Inca cemetery and the colonial town of Paucartambo, we descend the eastern slopes of the Andes through the cloud forest with its lush vegetation (ferns, orchids, bromeliads, etc.). We enjoy spectacular views of the Andes and may spot wildlife, including our national bird, the bright red Andean Cock-of-the-rock (Rupicola peruviana), performing its mating dance. Along the trail, we may see tanagers, quetzals, trogons, toucanets, and brightly colored hummingbirds, as well as hawks and possibly the first monkeys, such as the woolly monkey. In the late afternoon, we arrive at Bamboo Lodge (900 m), where we spend the night.

After a delicious early breakfast, we continued our journey by minibus towards the rainforest. We passed through the picturesque village of Pilcopata and crossed the river of the same name to reach the small port of Atalaya (550 m). Along the way, we took a walk through the forest to observe tropical birds and various species of monkeys in their natural habitat.

From Atalaya, we board a 15-meter motorized canoe and navigate for approximately 7 hours along the Alto Madre de Dios River, descending towards the Manu Biosphere Reserve. During the trip, we will enjoy the breathtaking Amazonian landscapes and have the opportunity to spot tiger herons, kingfishers, skimmers, vultures, caimans, and some of the 15 species of monkeys that inhabit Manu National Park.

In the afternoon, we arrived at the cozy Maquisapayoj Lodge (“Place of the Black Spider Monkey”), where comfortable rooms with private bathrooms awaited us.

After dinner, we'll take a night hike to an observation platform to visit the Tapir Clay Lick, home to one of the largest mammals in the rainforest. During the night, we'll also have the opportunity to observe insects, frogs, and snakes, and listen to the mysterious sounds of the Amazon rainforest.

At dawn, we will board our motorized boat bound for the great Macaw Clay Lick, one of the most impressive natural spectacles in the Amazon. From a strategically located observation platform, we will enjoy a privileged view to admire the flocks of colorful macaws (Ara chloroptera, Ara macao), parrots and parakeets that arrive every morning to feed on the mineral-rich clay, essential for their digestion.

With the help of our telescope, we will be able to appreciate every detail of their feathers and behaviors, while enjoying a delicious breakfast in the observation hide.

Afterwards, we'll return by boat to Maquisapayoj Lodge, where a hearty lunch will be waiting for us. After a short rest, we'll set out to explore trails through the primary forest, hiking towards the mammal clay lick within the reserve.

To increase our chances of spotting wildlife, especially the Amazonian tapir, we'll spend the night on an elevated platform equipped with mattresses and mosquito nets. With the help of our guide and his flashlight, we'll be able to observe the tapir in its natural habitat.

Opción alternativa: si prefieres, puedes regresar al lodge para descansar cómodamente en tu habitación privada.

We'll have breakfast very early to make the most of the first hours of the day, the ideal time for wildlife viewing. Then, we'll travel downriver to Cocha Blanco (White Lake), a beautiful lake surrounded by virgin rainforest. After a short hike through the forest, we'll board a rustic catamaran to search for the family of giant river otters that inhabit this area.

While exploring the lake, we will enjoy the Amazonian landscape and look for red howler monkeys, caimans, and a wide variety of tropical birds.

After lunch, we will take a walk to the observation tower, from where we will enjoy a spectacular panoramic view of the forest and be able to observe different species of birds and monkeys high in the canopy.

In the evening, we'll revisit the mammal clay lick in the reserve, where we'll have the opportunity to spot tapirs and other nocturnal animals. To make the most of this experience, we'll spend the night on an elevated platform equipped with mattresses and mosquito nets. With the help of our guide and his flashlight, we'll be able to observe the tapirs in their natural habitat.

After enjoying a delicious breakfast, we'll board our motorized boat again to navigate upstream on the majestic Madre de Dios River, returning to Atalaya. During the trip, we'll keep an eye out for wildlife, such as capybaras, caimans, and a wide variety of Amazonian birds that inhabit the riverbanks.

Weather permitting, we will make a refreshing stop to swim in the calm waters of the river, a unique experience in the heart of nature.

Upon arrival at the port of Atalaya, our private transport will be waiting to take us back to the cozy Bamboo Manu Eco Lodge, where we will stay in comfortable bungalows surrounded by rainforest.

Optional: After dinner, our naturalist guide will offer a night walk to discover the mysterious sounds and creatures of the jungle, such as insects, frogs, and small mammals.

After an early breakfast, we'll take a tour of the Bamboo Manu Eco Lodge gardens to identify plants, including the sacred coca plant, and observe different types of birds at the rustic feeders. Then we'll participate in a reforestation activity. Once the activity is complete, we'll have lunch and then head back to the city of Cusco.
