Departing early from Cusco, we begin our 8-hour journey by private minibus, climbing to the high mountain range at 3,900 m (13,000 ft). After a brief stop in Ninamarca to see the pre-Inca cemetery and the colonial village of Paucartambo, we descend the eastern slopes of the Andes through cloud forest with lush vegetation (ferns, orchids, bromeliads, etc.). We enjoy spectacular views of the Andes and may see wildlife such as our national bird, the brilliant red Cock-of-the-Rock (Rupicola peruviana), displaying its mating dance. Walking along the way, you may see tanagers, quetzals, trogons, toucanets, and brightly colored hummingbirds, as well as falcons and possibly your first monkeys, such as the woolly monkey. In the late afternoon, we arrive at Bamboo Lodge (900 m), where we spend the night.
After an early breakfast, we continue on our private transport, passing through the village of Pilcopata and crossing the Pilcopata River to reach the small port of Atalaya (550 m). Along the way, we stop for some birdwatching walks. In Atalaya, we embark on a 20-minute river cruise along the Alto Madre de Dios River. We have the opportunity to observe wildlife along the riverbanks, including capybaras, herons, purple scrub jays, kingfishers, and some of the monkey species that live in Manu.
Then we took a walk to Lake Machuwasi, lasting approximately 3 hours in total (round trip). During the tour we will observe alligators, caimans, shanshos, parrots, and a variety of birds. Upon arriving at Lake Machuwasi, we will use a typical wooden raft to explore the lake and observe the birds.
Returning from Machuwasi we will have our lunch. Then we will visit the giant Ceiba tree. The walk takes around 2 hours round trip, although the time may vary, since there are different trails that can be traveled. We return to Bamboo Manu Eco Lodge with great satisfaction, arriving we will have dinner, and then go to rest in our bungalow.
After an early breakfast, we'll tour the Bamboo Manu Eco Lodge gardens to explore medicinal plants, including the sacred coca plant, and observe different types of birds at the rustic bird feeders. Afterward, we'll engage in reforestation activities. Afterward, we'll have lunch before heading to Cusco.
