5 days – round trip along the Manu road

Fixed departures. Groups of 2 to 8 people.

General Itinerary:

Departing early from Cusco, we begin our 8-hour journey by private minibus, climbing to the high mountain range at 3,900 m (13,000 ft). After a brief stop in Ninamarca to see the pre-Inca cemetery and the colonial village of Paucartambo, we descend the eastern slopes of the Andes through cloud forest with lush vegetation (ferns, orchids, bromeliads, etc.). We enjoy spectacular views of the Andes and may see wildlife such as our national bird, the brilliant red Cock-of-the-Rock (Rupicola peruviana), displaying its mating dance. Walking along the way, you may see tanagers, quetzals, trogons, toucanets, and brightly colored hummingbirds, as well as falcons and possibly your first monkeys, such as the woolly monkey. In the late afternoon, we arrive at Bamboo Lodge (900 m), where we spend the night.

After a delicious early breakfast, we continued our journey by minibus towards the rainforest. We passed through the picturesque village of Pilcopata and crossed the river of the same name to reach the small port of Atalaya (550 m). Along the way, we took a walk through the forest to observe tropical birds and various species of monkeys in their natural habitat.

From Atalaya, we board a 15-meter motorized canoe and navigate for approximately 7 hours along the Alto Madre de Dios River, descending towards the Manu Biosphere Reserve. During the trip, we will enjoy the breathtaking Amazonian landscapes and have the opportunity to spot tiger herons, kingfishers, skimmers, vultures, caimans, and some of the 15 species of monkeys that inhabit Manu National Park.

In the afternoon, we arrived at the cozy Maquisapayoj Lodge (“Place of the Black Spider Monkey”), where comfortable rooms with private bathrooms awaited us.

After dinner, we'll take a night hike to an observation platform to visit the Tapir Clay Lick, home to one of the largest mammals in the rainforest. During the night, we'll also have the opportunity to observe insects, frogs, and snakes, and listen to the mysterious sounds of the Amazon rainforest.

At dawn, we'll take the boat to the large macaw clay lick at Blanquillo. From a platform, we'll have an excellent view of flocks of colorful macaws (Ara chloroptera, Ara macao), parrots, and parakeets congregating to eat the clay, essential for their digestion. Through our telescope, we'll be able to observe every detail of the birds. We'll have breakfast at the hide. Later, we'll explore some of Blanquillo's trails to observe more species of monkeys and birds. After lunch, and a short rest at the lodge, we'll hike for about an hour and a half through the primary forest to the reserve's mammal clay lick. For the best chance of spotting animals, especially the tapir, we'll spend the night on a raised platform (with mats and mosquito nets). Your guide will help you spot the tapir with a flashlight. If you prefer, you can return to the lodge and spend the night in your room.

We had breakfast very early. Afterward, we traveled downriver to visit Cocha Blanco (White Lake). After a short hike, we boarded a rustic catamaran to search for the family of giant river otters that live there. We enjoyed the beautiful surroundings on the lake and looked for monkeys (for example, red howler monkeys), caimans, and different varieties of birds. Once the tour was over, we returned by boat to Boca Manu, where we boarded our van for the approximately 4-hour drive back. We arrived at Bamboo Manu EcoLodge for dinner and an overnight stay in our bungalows.

After an early breakfast, we'll take a tour of the Bamboo Manu Eco Lodge gardens to identify plants, including the sacred coca plant, and observe different types of birds at the rustic feeders. Then we'll participate in a reforestation activity. Once the activity is complete, we'll have lunch and then head back to the city of Cusco.
