After a brief stop in Ninamarca to see the pre-Inca cemetery and the colonial village of Paucartambo, we descend the eastern slopes of the Andes through cloud forest with lush vegetation (ferns, orchids, bromeliads, etc.). We enjoy spectacular views of the Andes and may see wildlife such as our national bird, the brilliant red Cock-of-the-Rock (Rupicola peruviana), displaying its mating dance. Walking along the way, you may see tanagers, quetzals, trogons, toucanets, and brightly colored hummingbirds, as well as falcons and possibly your first monkeys, such as the woolly monkey. We passed through the picturesque village of Pilcopata and crossed the river of the same name to reach the small port of Atalaya (550 m). Along the way, we took a walk through the forest to observe tropical birds and various species of monkeys in their natural habitat.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From Atalaya, we board a 15-meter motorized canoe and navigate for approximately 7 hours along the Alto Madre de Dios River, descending towards the Manu Biosphere Reserve. During the trip, we will enjoy the breathtaking Amazonian landscapes and have the opportunity to spot tiger herons, kingfishers, skimmers, vultures, caimans, and some of the 15 species of monkeys that inhabit Manu National Park.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the afternoon, we arrived at the cozy Maquisapayoj Lodge (\u201cPlace of the Black Spider Monkey\u201d), where comfortable rooms with private bathrooms awaited us.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After dinner, we'll take a night hike to an observation platform to visit the Tapir Clay Lick, home to one of the largest mammals in the rainforest. Through our telescope, we'll be able to observe every detail of the birds. We'll have breakfast at the hide. Later, we'll explore some of Blanquillo's trails to observe more species of monkeys and birds. After lunch, and a short rest at the lodge, we'll hike for about an hour and a half through the primary forest to the reserve's mammal clay lick. For the best chance of spotting animals, especially the tapir, we'll spend the night on a raised platform (with mats and mosquito nets). Your guide will help you spot the tapir with a flashlight. Once the tour was over, we returned by boat to Boca Manu, where we boarded our van for the approximately 4-hour drive back.
